Feb. 11-15

WRITING:
The class was popping out of their seats over our Pop Rocks lesson last week.  Thank you for the donations to make this happen!

This week, we are using a new set of eyes to write.  Our 'poet eyes'.  Through this special vision, ordinary objects can be seen differently.  Ceilings become the skies to our classroom, pencil sharpeners become a holder for bees to buzz around the tip of the pencil.  We will explore objects in our classroom and write about the different ways we see them.

Our grammar lessons will tie into our writing and reading using the adjectives of sensory language. We will work on spelling patterns of open and closed syllables and will have a spelling check on Friday.

READING:
Continuing on with poetry, along with repetition, alliteration, fluency and tone, we will add the vowel and consonant repetition of sound.  Through these aspects the students will then visualize what the poet is saying, what the poem means and what the pictures could look like.

MATH:
We are mixing it up!  Addition and subtraction with regrouping will be combined this week.  The students will use their facts to sort through and sort out the addition from the subtraction problems.  Not only that, they will decide whether regrouping is necessary or not.  We will have a quick check on subtraction, a fun Valentine's math building project and a pocket book to sort addition and subtraction regrouping problems.

Our slogan for subtraction is "More on top, no need to stop. More on the floor, go next door to get 10 more. Numbers the same, zeros the game." The addition slogan is "If you have 10 or more, carry next door. If you have 9 or less, let it rest."

SCIENCE:
Science is back and we are looking up!  Up in the sky, that is.  We will study objects in the sky, paying close attention to the sun, clouds and shadows during the day.  Our study of the night sky will be next week.
